Families are returning to Atlanta Public Schools in droves! As a result, Atlanta Public Schools announced plans to relieve overcrowding at Sutton Middle School. Currently, Sutton Middle School’s enrollment has exceeded planned capacity and is expected to grow steadily in the upcoming years. Because of this growth, the district has determined the need for a second middle school to serve the Buckhead community. The proposal is to build a new state of the art high school and to turn the current North Atlanta High School campus into a middle school. Until the new high school is completed, portable classrooms will be placed on the Sutton campus to help with current overcrowding.
The new high school should be completed in time for the 2012-2013 school year and is projected to cost between $35 and $45 million. What we are all wondering…where is the city going to find 30+ acres in Buckhead to build the high school? Apparently, they already have a site in mind and are negotiating for its purchase. I will keep you posted!
Here’s what the AJC has to say on the proposal.
