Chastain Horse Park, 4371 Powers Ferry Road, 404-257-1470, PATH Foundation park trail: 3.3-mile circuit for jogging, bicycling, walking. New state-of-the-art playground for children on West Wieuca Road across from the baseball field.

The Chastain Horse Park Therapeutic Riding Program for students with mental and physical disabilities and children-at-risk now serves over 350 students annually through summer camps and special therapeutic sessions throughout the year in addition to more than 145 students and adults each week. The school lesson program serves over 200 students each year. The program is accredited by NARHA (the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association). All the park’s instructors have attained a national instructor certification, and therapists have completed training through the American Hippotherapy Association.

Other offerings include the Hunter Equitation Program providing hunter/jumper riding lessons to the general public, horse boarding, and summer camps.

Chastain Park Amphitheatre built in 1938. In 1945, it was named for Troy G. Chastain, a Fulton County commissioner who led the development of Atlanta’s park system. The city of Atlanta took over ownership of the amphitheater in 1952, and since 1973, the Atlanta Symphony has been holding its popular summer concert series there. It also is the venue for other shows from April to October. The amphitheater is at 4469 Stella Dr., or Powers Ferry Rd. at West Wieuca Rd., telephone 404-233-2227. Chastain Park Tennis CenterChastain Park tennis center has been transformed! The newly designed tennis center was unveiled August 18, 2010. NYO baseballPlay Ball! Northside Youth Organization (NYO) provides organized recreational athletic opportunities — baseball, softball, basketball, football and cheerleading–for over 3,000 children, ages 5 to 16, every year. NYO serves children from Atlanta and Fulton County, with the program primarily run from Chastain Park. NYO is the largest youth, multi-sport organization in Georgia. NYO continues to operate programs under an agreement with the City of Atlanta—an ongoing agreement since 1966– and maintains all of the facilities, paid for with fees and annual contributions. The Chastain Park pool is a great way to beat the summer heat! The Chastain Park Athletic Club (CPAC) maintains and operates the pool as a non-profit outreach. Its mission is to promote aquatic sports and life safety through community outreach. Pool hours for the public is 10 pm-5 pm during the summer. Members and their guests have extended hours daily from 5-8 pm and until 9 pm on Friday.

Shopping & Dining

Horseradish GrillChastain Park has its own restaurant, Horseradish Grill, which grows many of its own organic vegetables and herbs. You will also find Flip Burger Boutique in Buckhead’s Tuxedo Plaza offering gourmet burgers with a chic twist as well as Landmark Diner. Food 101 is a favorite as well as Goldberg’s Deli. Fellini’s Pizza and its sister restaurant La Fonda Latina are also popular for lunch and dinner. Pig N Chick is a favorite for barbecue ribs or sandwiches for Chastain Park concert picnic fare. In Fountain Oaks Shopping Center, Nancy G’s Cafe is sure to please. For a special treat, try 10 Degrees South which features South African cuisine and a lively bar filled with music. And speaking of music, Hal’s and Johnny’s Hideaway, go way back in Atlanta history as night spots not to be missed.

Living Green

Most of us are trying to live cleaner and greener these days and take better care of our planet. Here are a few ways to live greener in Chastain Park.

  • Farmers MarketJoin The Chastain Park Conservancy and work together to make Chastain Park cleaner, greener and safer. There are lots of opportunities to volunteer and get involved!
  • Eat fresh and support local farmers. Visit the Peachtree Road Farmers’ Market is held at the Cathedral of St. Philip at 2744 Peachtree Road NW every Saturday 9:00 am- 12:30pm beginning in April and continuing through December. The Sandy Springs Farmers Market is held in the parking lot at 235 Sandy Springs Circle NW every Saturday 8:00 a.m.- noon beginning in April and continuing through December.
  • Recycle. The Dick Schmalz Recycling Center is located at 460 Morgan Falls Road.  Items accepted include paper, plastics, metals, aluminum, and glass. Click here for specific guidelines. If you live in the Atlanta city limits, the City of Atlanta offers curbside recycling pickup on a voluntary basis. Every resident is given a small recycling bin when establishing service.   • Drive less, take MARTA. There are numerous bus routes and rail routes that will take you to locations throughout Atlanta and Atlanta suburbs.
  • Carpool! The Clean Air Campaign is a Georgia nonprofit organization created to improve air quality and reduce traffic congestion. Find a carpool partner and earn money!
